“Our War“

Answer to Armin Thurnher’s editorial “About life and writing in ‘our war'” in FALTER 26/22:

“It’s war, it’s war,
O God’s angel forbid,
And speak into it!“

(Matthias Claudius)

Armin Thurnher’s editorial is both beneficial and painful in its openness. We are watching a “chicken game” in which two warring factions are racing towards the abyss at enormous speed. Whoever brakes first loses. Driving these two automobiles are Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Seemingly Vladimir is fighting for equality and Volodymyr for liberty. Fraternity is torn to shreds. Apparently, however, two diametrically opposed interest groups are colliding here: Beijing’s Tiananmen and New York City’s Wall Street. In any case, Europeans (and Russians) get trampled on – and pay for it too. Freely adapted from Matthias Claudius, I would like to exclaim: “I wish not to be a passenger!”

P.S.: Putin’s wishes would be easy to fulfill: Ukraine as a state based on the Austrian model, a social market economy, federalism with minority rights and military neutrality. So, I have nothing against that. I like living in such conditions.

Best regards

Peter Wurm
